Bad drivers avoiding court appearances

The number of motorists facing magistrates' courts has dropped by 12.6 per cent in the past year, according to figures by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).

Officials noted that the amount of people being prosecuted for driving offences fell from one million in 2010 to 888,000 in 2011, and the IAM believes that people are choosing to go on awareness courses rather than take the points and fine.

Figures revealed that the amount of people prosecuted for failing to stop at the scene of an accident fell by 10.5 per cent while the number of cases where cameras caught drivers breaking the speed limit dropped by ten per cent.

While the IAM welcomed the expansion of these courses to reform offending drivers, it said that the government needed to explain the reasons for the sharp falls.

Simon Best, IAM chief executive, said: "The recession and the expansion of awareness courses for offences like speeding could well be having an impact on these figures - more people are opting for courses rather than points and this improves driving."
