Birmingham motorists contacted over road closures during Pope's visit

Car owners in Birmingham have been contacted by local authorities to advise them on the traffic disruptions they can expect when the Pope visits the area later this month.

Around ten thousand letters have been mailed out to residents within a mile radius of Cofton Park, where Pope Benedict XVI will be beatifying Cardinal Newman in a ceremony taking place on September 18th 2010.

Several roads are to be closed off in order to cope with the influx of attendees, meaning residents will need passes to access their homes, while other roadways will be subject to restrictions.

Birmingham City Council states that restrictions are necessary to ensure safety for all concerned, as well as making sure residents and visitors are not inconvenienced by inconsiderate parking.

Councillor Alan Rudge said: "We are doing everything we can to minimise disruption in the lead up to and during the weekend of the visit by His Holiness, which is part of the first ever state Papal visit to the UK."

It was also announced this week that the Pope will be travelling along a stretch of Birmingham's Hagley Road in a Popemobile in order to give residents an additional chance to see him.
