Brits throw 29m cigarettes out of cars every year

As the celebrations of the diamond jubilee showed, Britons have a huge sense of pride about the country they live in, but new research begs to differ.

Breakdown company Green Flag found the country's motorways are being littered with 'carbage' as more and more people choose to throw rubbish out of their vehicle on long journeys.

The firm found that 29 million cigarette butts are scattered on the UK's roads every year and, if they were laid out end to end, would stretch from London to Aberdeen.

Following on from cigarettes, food wrappers and food also topped the table of discarded rubbish from car windows.

Of the excuses given for littering the nation's road, 27 per cent of people said that they were trying to rid their vehicle of foul odours, while 17 per cent threw away rubbish because they were too lazy to find a bin.

Miranda Schunke, spokesperson for Green Flag, said: "All drivers have a responsibility to keep our roads clean and safe.  Motorists should also be aware if they eat, drink or smoke behind the wheel, they risk between three and nine penalty points for not driving with due care and attention."
