Motor publication Auto Express has launched a new campaign calling on car manufacturers to publish details of known problems with their vehicles.
Industry bodies including the RAC and the Retail Motor Industry Federation have backed the initiative, which would compel carmakers to issue public technical service bulletins detailing issues, causes and possible fixes for problematic models.
Auto Express has raised concerns over the fact that faults are currently only acknowledged in the case of a recall, while little information is given on common reliability issues.
An investigation by the publication also revealed that independent garages are often unable to access important technical information, meaning they are forced to refer customers to franchised dealers.
David Johns, Auto Express' editor in chief, said: "It is time action was taken to ensure complete transparency in this area."
This comes in the same year that Japanese carmaker Toyota was forced to recall a number of its vehicles after it emerged many had been shipped with faulty accelerator pedals.
