DfT attempt to tackle red tape
Councils are to be given more autonomy in dealing with road works in an effort to reduce congestion on Britain's roads and cut red tape and bureaucracy in the road system, the Department for Transport (DfT) has revealed.
The street permit scheme is expected to place more restrictions on councils regarding how long they can work in an area and how much space they must leave for motorists.
At the moment councils are required to apply to the DfT in order to implement such a permit system, but this will be streamlined through the new initiative.
Any companies which break the terms of the permit can be eligible for a fine of up to £5,000.
"I hope that this will encourage more councils to develop permit schemes and make use of them to help reduce disruption and frustration for the travelling public," said transport minister Norman Baker.
The DfT recently announced plans to allow councils to advertise road restrictions more easily, slashing red tape and cutting administrative costs.
