Drivers urged to keep two hands on the wheel
British motorists are being urged to keep both hands on the wheel while driving to reduce the risk of having a crash.
Research carried out by scientists at the University of Leeds, on the request of esure, found that drivers were more likely to be in an accident while they only had one hand on the wheel.
According to the insurer, two million people have had an accident or near miss when they have not been concentrating on the road. Using a simulator, the Leeds scientists found that a eating while driving slowed reaction times by 44 per cent while sipping a drink reduced responses by 22 per cent.
With insurance premiums being at the their highest in six years drivers are being warned to be careful while on the road.
Mike Pickard, from esure, said: "We are appealing for all motorists to take the time to properly plan their car journey before leaving the house. Eat before you step into the car and plan regular breaks at service stations to help fuel any cravings whilst behind the wheel."
