Drivers warned over aquaplaning dangers

As torrential downpours continue to plague the UK there seems to be no end in sight as the gloom is predicted to carry on during May.

While the rain may be a minor inconvenience for some, drivers are being warned about the potential dangers that can be caused due to aquaplaning.

This is where excessive rain water can build a cushion between the road and a car's tyre and lead to loss of steering control and even a collision.

Officials at Delticom have offered motorists a series of advisory tips to ensure that they are not caught out in a heavy downpour. Experts have urged drivers to make sure they have sufficient tread of four millimetres, an increase on the government standard of 1.6mm.

Recent research by campaign group TyreSafe found that many motorists are driving around on worn or damaged were causing a hazard for themselves and other road users.

Stuart Jackson, chairman TyreSafe, said: "With rigorous quality controls on all new tyres, fitting these as replacements is undoubtedly the safest option. What's more, as our investigation showed, it's often the best value too."
