Drivers warned over "unpredictable" horses

There can be many hazards on the UK's highways and the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has highlighted horse riders in its latest advice to drivers.
Officials at the organisation have said that when approaching one of these animals walking on the side of the road it is important not to speed up or rush past as it may startle it.
The IAM stated that horses are unpredictable beasts and do not like to be kept waiting for long periods so when stuck in a queue motorists are being advised to give them enough room to fidget.
Horses also do not like surprises so when approaching one of them from behind a driver must give it time to see the car; this is even more crucial for hybrid or electric vehicle owners due to their reduced noise.
Peter Rodger, IAM chief examiner, said: "They [horses] have as much right as car drivers to be there, but a lack of understanding puts them at risk. Many riders will try to communicate with you - make eye contact."
