Glasgow City Council has taken delivery of ten Peugeot eExpert electric vehicles for its fleet as part of a new trial programme.
The authority has partnered with organisations including Allied Electric, Axeon, Scottish Power and Strathclyde University on the scheme, which will see the cars used for purposes such as social worker visits and planning officer site inspections.
It is designed as a demonstration initiative to showcase and assess the viability of electric car usage, with the Glasgow project representing one of eight taking place across the UK.
The city council will also be taking on a further 30 Peugeot ePartners in September 2010.
Councillor Ruth Simpson, executive member for sustainability and the environment, said: "The council is keen to lead by example to drive environmental change in the city and we hope, if the trial proves successful, to include electric vehicles permanently within the council's fleet."
This comes after Liverpool City Council purchased four Mitsubishi MiEV electric cars earlier this month as part of another low-carbon scheme.
