Highways Agency issues cold weather advice
Drivers setting off on the roads in the coming days have been warned to be cautious by the Highways Agency, which warned inclement weather can create dangers which are less obvious than snow or sleet.
The Met Office cold weather alert has been issued for the entire country and is predicting temperatures of minus three in London and Birmingham.
Jason Glasson of the Highways Agency's winter team warned motorists to leave extra time to prepare for journeys in the morning, as this can take longer in winter and it is wise not to set off until fully prepared.
"You should make sure you have plenty of warm clothing for you and your passengers. If you break down on the motorway it's dangerous to stay in your vehicle," added Mr Glasson.
Vehicle rescue operator www.startrescue.co.uk recently reminded drivers there are a number of preparatory steps to take before setting off on a journey in cold weather, including checking the charge of the car's battery.
