Car owners in a Merseyside suburb have seen their vehicles defaced by graffiti vandals, prompting an investigation by police.
More than 12 officers have been conducting inquiries after around one hundred vehicles and houses were spray-painted in New Brighton, Wirral in a late-night spree, reports the Liverpool Echo.
As well as cars, the vandals targeted homes, post boxes and two medical centres, leaving obscene messages and graffiti scrawls which could cost several thousand pounds to completely erase, according to estimates.
Local councillor Tony Pritchard stated that the criminals must be made an example of, calling for an exception to be made to the standard practice of property owners taking responsibility for graffiti defacement.
He said: "I'm going to ask the council to remove the obscene graffiti. I'm hoping they will step in."
This comes after Merseyside Police issued a warning to car criminals in June 2010 that patrolling officers will take action against any person seen to be acting in a suspicious way.
