Motorists 'set for customer service improvement in garages'
Drivers visiting UK garages to get their MOT will be offered more transparent and less expensive services under a raft of new measures set out by transport secretary Justine Greening.
This came after an examination of the existing service found a number of unsatisfactory elements, including data from the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) showing 27.7 per cent of vehicles tested in 2010-2011 had one or more defects that were either missed by MOT test centres or incorrectly assessed.
Ms Greening said garages are crucial to maintaining Britain's growing reputation for road safety but emphasises the fact they could improve their services even further.
"I want each motorist to be confident that a visit to the garage ends with their car repaired to a high standard by reputable mechanics, rather than uncertainty about cost and quality of service," she added.
The government intends to work with the industry, consumer groups and motoring organisations to bring about the planned changes.
Last year VOSA launched an investigation into a Kent garage that resulted in the establishment being fined for faking MOT certificates.
