Manchester motorists travelling to the Old Trafford football and cricket grounds will soon benefit from variable message signs displaying relevant information.
Trafford Council is installing eight of the signs around the area, of which five are already operational, in order to provide drivers with advance notice of major events which could affect traffic conditions.
This will allow travellers to revise their journey times according to sporting schedules, while general road safety messages will be displayed at times when no events are scheduled.
It is hoped that the move will help to ease congestion in the area and ensure the safety of road users.
A Manchester United spokesman added: "We hope the new signs will be useful for motorists who want to do everything they can to avoid match day traffic, as well as keeping the local community informed."
Last week, Road Safety Analysis Limited published research showing that the Trafford borough's roads are safer for children than anywhere else in the Greater Manchester region.
