Spaghetti Junction hits the big 40

It is one of the UK's most iconic landmarks, and today (May 23rd) Spaghetti Junction celebrates its 40th birthday.
The originally named Gravelly Hill Interchange was first opened in 1972, and was quickly dubbed 'Spaghetti Junction' by journalist Roy Smith, who commented on the interlocking roads that made up this structure.
Forty years on, and it still stands as one of the country's most famous and unique road network just mere miles away from England's second city. Within the first year of opening, it was used by an average of 40,000 vehicles a day, but that has now swelled to 210,000.
Mike Penning, roads minister, said: "Over the last four decades it has been one of the hubs of our transport system and made a significant contribution to the economic development of the West Midlands and the country as a whole."
As the country is continually moving forward, so too is Spaghetti Junction and the Highways Agency has announced that a new technology will be installed on the network to prepare it for managed motorways scheme which is due to be brought in.
