Women bear brunt of car insurance hikes
Women are bearing the brunt of car insurance increases with some regional rate rises reaching 9.7 per cent.
Female motorists were also recently hit with the news that their premiums could soar by an average of £360 under a regulation change by the European Union. It is set to be brought in to make sure that there is no divide between men and women although males are statistically more likely to have an accident.
Research by Confused.com and Tower Watson Car Insurance found, despite year-on-year premiums falling by three per cent overall, female drivers in areas such as Manchester and Merseyside have seen prices rise.
Premiums for women aged 21 to 25 have risen by 4.7 per cent while for those aged 66 to 70 saw it increase by 9.7 per cent, four percentage points more than male counterparts.
Gareth Kloet, from Confused.com said: "The differences highlighted in the price index shows that there has been a shift in how much men and women are charged for their car insurance, however the picture is unclear. Customers need to shop around, and consider switching insurers to get the best deal."
