Younger drivers bearing brunt of high insurance premiums

Owning a car is becoming more and more expensive for younger drivers, as research finds that insurance premiums continue to soar.
A study by Confused.com has revealed that motorists aged between 17 and 20 are paying 18 per cent more for their car insurance than the national average, with young males having to stump up eye-watering sums to protect their vehicle.
The organisation's research found that 17 to 20-year olds pay an average of £2,499 in annual comprehensive cover, while those over the age of 71 only have to fork out £436. The figure is even higher for young males who have to find £3,365 a year for vehicle protection.
Gareth Kloet, head of car insurance at Confused.com said: "Each age group is costed by their statistical risk and this includes the value of the car itself, the experience levels of the driver, past history and where they live among other factors."
A recent survey by RoadSafe found that 58 per cent of young drivers admit to using a smartphone while behind the wheel of their car.
