New legislation to give the authorities more powers to remove cars without valid tax discs could soon be introduced, according to Auto Express.
The magazine reports that proposals being pushed by NCP services and the DVLA could give their staff more powers to clamp, remove or crush cars that are found to be without tax and that this could include vehicles on private property.
One DVLA spokeswoman has welcomed the new proposals and reminds motorists that are not breaking the law have nothing to fear.
"If you've purchased your road fund licence or correctly applied for the Statutory Off Road Notification, there won't be a problem," she said.
It is thought that the proposals could be part of a larger plan to give NCP Services and the DVLA more powers and that previously authorities could only intervene if a vehicle was parked on a public road.
The Observer recently reported that cheaper road tax incentives could be enough to see many people opting to trade in their gas-guzzling 4x4s for more ecologically friendly hybrid models.
