Campaign launched to save freight policing body
The Freight Transport Association (FTA) and the Road Haulage Association (RHA) have joined forces, along with sector publisher Road Transport Media, to launch a campaign aimed at securing the future of freight crime investigative unit TruckPol.
Established after the closure of the National Stolen Lorry Load Desk (NSLLD) in April 2003, TruckPol has been funded by donations from the private sector since last year.
However, without a further cash injection the body could be set to close.
Theo de Pencier, chief executive of FTA, said: "TruckPol plays a key role in the fight against criminal gangs which target a sector that is both vulnerable and attractive to thieves."
It is the only organisation dedicated to collating and providing accurate information on UK truck crime and would be sorely missed were it to fold, setting the standard of crime prevention in the industry back by ten years, added RHA chief executive Geoff Dunning.
