Freight sector 'taking strides to reduce emissions'
Haulage companies in the UK have made a concerted effort to cut down on their carbon emission and reduce the pollution caused by the sector, according to the Freight Transport Association (FTA).
The Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme's second annual report has revealed a collective reduction of 2.6 per cent on a year-on-year basis, putting the industry in a good position to reach its stated target of an eight per cent reduction by 2015.
Major high street retailers, small and medium-size hauliers and utility companies have all joined the scheme.
Simon Chapman, the FTA's chief economist, said: "As well as demonstrating the industry's commitment to reducing its emissions, the scheme is acting as a catalyst for business improvement for the organisations that have joined."
He added that businesses could cut their carbon emission through the combination of commitment, good planning and technology.
James Hookham, managing director of policy and communications at FTA, expressed his hopes this trend will continue in 2012.
