FTA: Lorry charge must be cost-neutral
Government proposals to charge foreign lorries for using UK roads have been met with approval from the Freight Transport Association (FTA), although it has warned the scheme should not place any financial or administrative burden on UK operators.
Simon Chapman, the FTA's chief economist, pointed out foreign freight operators do not contribute any money to the treasury under the current system, often filling up with petrol in areas outside the UK where the fuel duty is lower.
He added that British hauliers spent thousands annually through negotiating similar systems in mainland Europe.
The proposal had recognised the need to avoid placing too much of a burden on UK operators but the FTA would remain vigilant, Mr Chapman claimed.
"As ever the devil is in the detail and the FTA will be making sure that the final proposal works for, and not against, the industry," he said.
The FTA was recently assured an operator licensing scheme would be put into place in Northern Ireland before April.
