The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has committed to a new scheme designed to reduce the carbon emissions produced by the haulage sector.
Under the terms of the new Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme, emissions generated by the transport industry will be monitored and reported with the aim of introducing measures to limit this impact.
The body states that this hard data is necessary to make informed decisions on emissions reduction schemes, criticising the government's current policy of increasing fuel duty as counter-productive.
Stewart Oades, president of the FTA, stated that the body will now be looking to work together with the Department of Transport in order to determine the best way to proceed.
He said: "We need to start making intelligent decisions if we want to make a meaningful reduction in our carbon output without doing irreparable damage to British business along the way."
Last month, the FTA criticised the government for failing to lower bridge tolls on the Severn River crossing, which it claims are damaging Welsh business.
