Hauliers 'should be more aware of tyre safety'

Road hauliers need to be more vigilant than ever to ensure that their truck's tyres are legal and well looked after, it has been claimed.

According to non-for-profit organisation TyreSafe, fleet operators are under pressure to make sure that haulage vehicles are safe and roadworthy from the likes of the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency.

As such, it claimed that tyre maintenance should be a key priority for operators and hauliers.

TyreSafe chairman Stuart Jackson commented: "Making tyre maintenance a key priority allows commercial fleet operators to help ensure the safety of their drivers and reduce the number of accidents caused by defective tyres on our roads."

This comes after the company revealed plans to launch a new online truck tyre safety guide.

Meanwhile, the Retail Motor Industry Federation recently pointed out that commercial vehicle drivers are among those most guilty of carrying out regular maintenance on their trucks and vans.
