Industry bodies call for privatised HGV testing

Industry bodies representing the haulage sector have urged the government to transfer responsibility for HGV testing to the private sector.

The Road Haulage Association (RHA), Freight Transport Association, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders and the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association have issued a joint letter to the Department for Transport making the call.

It was argued by the bodies that the previous Labour government's policy of having Vehicle and Operator Services Agency staff testing trucks in third party workshops was unnecessarily complex and costly.

Instead, it was suggested that tests should be conducted by approved individuals, with an independent body monitoring standards.

RHA chief executive Geoff Dunning said: "This system is now well-proven for lighter vehicles in terms of both standards and road safety outcomes."

Last month, the RHA wrote to the government in order to raise concerns about a lack of truck parking provisions in the UK, which it believes is leading to increased security issues.
