Scrapping tariff 'could raise operator costs'
The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has spoken out about plans to scrap the Road Equivalent Tariff (RET) for lorries using ferry services in the Western Isles of Scotland.
Lorries will from April cease to be included in the RET scheme, which offers discounted rates by setting ferry fares at the equivalent cost for vehicles travelling the same distance by road.
Christopher MacRae, the FTA's head of policy in Scotland, said the move could push up the price of living in island communities if higher transport costs are passed on to consumers.
He claimed that freight operators have a "vital role" to play in island life.
"In the current economic climate, threatening inflation to Scotland’s tourist industry is a grave misjudgement," Mr MacRae said.
It is estimated that costs to large commercial vehicles could increase by more than 100 per cent as a result of scrapping the RET.
The government is currently consulting on plans to implement a new road usage charge for foreign lorries driving in the UK.
