Car registrations remain steady in January
The January car market remained steady throughout the first month of 2012 as new car registrations rose tentatively by 0.03 per cent to reach 128,853 units in January.
Despite a general lack of consumer confidence and an economic downfall, the new car market is expected to remain stable in 2012, dipping just one per cent to 1.92 million units in 2012, before recovering in 2013.
Society of Motor Manufacturer and Traders (SMMT) figures also showed that diesel and alternatively-fuelled cars enjoyed an increase in sales volumes, rising by 6.3 per cent and 17.7 per cent respectively.
This will be "an exciting year with record numbers of new models coming to market filled with innovative technology that will save the motorist fuel, enhance comfort and increase levels of safety and security", said SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt.
The industry body also found that truck registrations increased in January while the commercial van market tumbled.
