Nissan believes its forthcoming Juke compact sports crossover is set to replicate the success of the Qashqai.
Production work on the model began at the manufacturer's Sunderland plant yesterday (August 26th) and Nissan said more than 22,500 pre-orders have already been received across Europe.
Trevor Mann, the firm's senior vice president of marketing in Europe, claimed the Juke will provide "a much-needed breath of fresh air within the small car segment".
He also said the new model will help to "reinforce Nissan's position as a pioneer of crossover vehicles".
Set to go on sale across Europe next month, the Juke has been designed as an alternative to the traditional small hatchback, combining elements of an SUV and a sports car.
Nissan is expecting to make up to 100,000 units each year in Sunderland, meaning the Juke will be the plant's second most-produced model behind the Qashqai.
The manufacturer recently announced a 7.6 per cent year-on-year increase in European sales for July, bringing its market share to a five-year high of 3.4 per cent.
