Van dealers 'could be affected by emissions rules'

People in the motor trade industry need to be aware of new emissions rules as they could spark lower residual values in the used van market, according to pricing expert CAP.

It has warned compliance with the new Euro 5 emissions legislation means diesel particulate filters, which could be problematic for operators who only use their vans for short-distance city work.

This is because urban conditions can have an especially degenerative effect on the filters, necessitating their replacement or regular repair.

Filtration devices can clean themselves if put through specific drive cycles, but this may not be possible for users who typically drive their van only for a short time every day.

"These filters need to reach a certain operating temperature before effectively reducing particulate emissions, but if this is not achieved they can become prone to clogging," said CAP's John Watts.

European emissions standards have been set up in an effort to limit the pollution caused by commercial vehicles across the continent.
