Members of Norwich City Council are spending over £1,000 per week on private hire cab fares.
According to Norwich Evening News 24, it has been revealed that the local council spent an estimated £57,000 in 12 months following a request by the newspaper to look at council expenditure.
Although the figures may prove disconcerting reading for local tax-payers they show that taxi drivers in the area could have seen a boost in their fares.
The paper reports that council bosses will now launch a review into the reports but that the spending figure has been defended by Lynette Day, a spokeswoman for the city council.
"Norwich City Council uses a variety of transport methods to ensure our staff can travel to the places their work requires," she said.
She added that wherever possible the council tries to make use of the most economic and environmentally friendly methods of travel available.
Last month the website reported that plans to bring Eurostar-style trains to Norwich from London were being considered by city councillors.
