Bristol taxis targeted in spot checks

Officials in Bristol are looking to improve standards of taxis in the city by undertaking a plethora of spot checks.
The latest operation saw inspectors order 17 taxis off the roads which were deemed to be illegally in use and offending drivers had their licences suspended until the problem highlighted by officials was rectified, The Post reports.
In a joint effort between the police and the city council's licensing enforcement team and Vehicle and Operator Services Agency, the overnight spot checks stopped 91 private hire cabs and hackney carriages.
Common defects included problems with fire extinguishers, tyres, lights and seats belts.
Police Inspector Keith Rundle told the source: "Thanks to ongoing operations like this one people in Bristol can be assured that they are travelling in vehicles that are roadworthy and that they are being driven by legitimate drivers."
It comes after taxi drivers in Plymouth were handed fixed penalty notices for flouting smoking laws when in their vehicle, according to the Plymouth Herald.
