Durham still congested despite new taxi rank

Congestion in Durham continues to be a major problem despite the council's decision to install a new five-space taxi rank.
Durham County Council recently set up a new bay with room for five vehicles between the Leazes Bowl roundabout and Claypath which will be in operation between 18:00 BST and 08:00 BST every evening and is set to open from Thursday (May 3rd).
However, critics believe that this will not stop the city becoming overly congested on a night time. Since the authority deregulated the taxi trade in September a plethora of firms have been vying for competition in the area.
Elvet councillor David Freeman told the Northern Echo: "The taxi situation in Claypath is totally unacceptable. Residents' lives are being blighted by the noise of engines, radios playing and car doors slamming until early morning."
Durham is a nightlife hotspot in the north-east with people from all over the region choosing to come to the city as opposed to the likes of Newcastle or Sunderland due to its compact centre and wide variety of bars.
