Irish taxi's green lights labelled "inherently racist"

The Irish transport minister has ordered all taxis to remove green lights after branding them "inherently racist".

Leo Varadkar has claimed that the decision by some drivers to put green lights on top of their vehicles as being "inherently xenophobic" however, workers have claimed that they are only to show that the cab is available for hire, the BBC reports.

Christy Humphrey, from the National Private Hire and Taxi Association, has stated that the lights are not showing a person's nationality and that it is illegal for any taxi to display anything on the roof sign other than a telephone number directing people where to book.

She told the BBC: "All the light is indicating is that it is a taxi. It is not indicating that the man driving the taxi is black or white. They are certainly not meant to signify they are Irish because anybody of any nationality can go in and buy one."

Elsewhere, customers in London will be able to take advantage of a smartphone application known as Get Taxi which allows people to order cabs simply clicking on their phone.
