Isle of Wight taxi drivers to see licence hike

Isle of Wight taxi drivers are set to see the price of their licence increase by more than half.

According to the Isle of Wight County Press, taxi drivers will have to pay 72.4 per cent more for their licences under plans being discussed by the island's council.

Drivers' licences currently cost just £58 but if proposals are given the go-ahead, this cost would shoot up to £100.

Almost 100 taxi drivers on the Isle of Wight wrote letters of objection to complain about the rise and point out that it is well above inflation, which currently stands at around three per cent.

This comes after the Hartlepool Mail reported that councils in the Tees Valley region are also currently discussing plans to charge taxi drivers more money to renew their licences because of new standardisation measures.

Councillor Ged Hall, who represents the Burn Valley area, said: "You hear from taxi drivers that they already struggle with the burden of legislation they have upon themselves."
