Manchester taxi firm hails success of Eco Cars scheme

A taxi company in Manchester has highlighted the interest it has seen from clients since setting up a dedicated arm of its business for hybrid vehicles.

Family business Jeffries Cars purchased two Toyota Prius hybrids earlier this year to use in its new Eco Cars unit, with which it has aimed to promote the use of environmentally-friendly means of transport.

Company director Sarah Jeffries stated that nine out of ten of its passengers express interest in the low-carbon vehicles, while it has also won contracts from organisations such as the NHS because of their CO2 reduction benefits.

She stated that the cars have also been popular among drivers for their fuel economy, adding that the company will soon be taking delivery of a third Prius.

"People are genuinely interested in taking a greener route in Manchester and there's a lot of interest in hybrid technology and awareness of the fuel and carbon savings possible," said Ms Jeffries.

According to figures released by Toyota earlier this month, the manufacturer has sold more than 200,000 Prius cars to clients in Europe since it launched in 2000.
