Manchester taxi firm wins praise for driver photo initiative

A taxi firm in the Manchester area has received a positive reception after introducing a new scheme to send photos of its drivers out to customers via mobile phone.

Cheetham Hill-based 6 111 111, formerly Academy Taxis, has introduced a scheme whereby passengers are sent pictures of the driver who is about to collect them in a bid to increase security.

Kashef Ahmad, the company's owner, told BBC Asian Network that the initiative has garnered a "very good response" from female passengers who are worried about bogus cabbies.

He said: "For us it is about providing a level of service that is better than our competitors and for the customer a level of safety and awareness of who their driver will be."

The scheme has been implemented in response to the increasing problem caused by unlicensed drivers and touts across the country.

Mr Ahmad told the Manchester Evening News last month that he also hopes the initiative can help to modernise the industry.
