New taxi licensing scheme to come to NI
Northern Ireland taxi drivers are set to be subject to more stringent regulation after a new licensing scheme was unveiled.
The initiative is designed to improve passenger safety and confidence in the hire vehicles as around 10,000 taxi drivers operate individually while some of the "supersize" companies have 600 or 700 vehicles on their books.
Ulster Unionist Danny Kinahan stated that the scheme would be put into place on October 31st and those operators that register in the two months prior to the end of this period will only have to pay a registration fee of £40 as opposed to the current £140.
Mr Kinahan said: "The taxi business is fragmented. We reckon that there are some 10,000 taxi drivers who can operate individually. There are also supersized firms, some of which have an affiliation of 500, 600 or even 700 taxis."
It comes as a study by the DVLA found that a quarter of taxis in the country were considered unroadworthy during a series of spot checks.
