NI taxis could be allowed to use bus lanes

Northern Irish taxi drivers could be allowed to use the country's bus lanes after a consultation was launched on the issue.
A change in the way cabs are licensed has been brought forward by the Department of Environment that could see the two-tier system that is currently in place for private and public taxis replaced with one singular regulation.
If approved, the new ruling will see all taxis being allowed to pick up customers on the street and not just be reserved for public cabs. It has been stressed that the change would only affect those lanes that allowed taxi access and would be clearly marked using traffic signage.
Danny Kennedy, regional developer minister, supported the proposals and said: "The future operating plans for taxis has prompted my department’s proposal to allow any taxi to use those bus lanes where currently only the 'permitted' public hire taxis have access."
