Southampton taxi numbers to be capped

Southampton City Council has announced that the number of taxis within the area will be capped at 283.
It comes after cabbies in the city called on the local authority to not introduce anymore licenses for extra vehicles as competition would become too fierce and had the potential to ruin their livelihoods, the Daily Echo reports.
The council has responded to these claims, and in a once in three years report, stated that there would be no more hail and ride taxis allowed to be registered in the city to ease the pressure on current drivers.
Clive Johnson, chairman of the Southampton Trade Association, told the source: "It was inevitable really. At the present moment in time we’ve got taxi drivers being booked for parking at the end of ranks because we’ve nowhere to go. There is no work out there."
It comes after councils in areas such as Bristol and Lancashire have been working together with the local police forces to carry out spot checks on taxis which are deemed not roadworthy.
