Spot checks force 11 taxis off Lancashire roads

A crackdown on taxis in Nelson, Lancashire, has seen over half of the vehicles checked being forced off the roads.
A joint effort between Pendle Council, the police and Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) stopped 18 taxis as part of a countrywide initiative on Friday (May 11th).
Of these vehicles, 11 were forced off the road due to damages that rendered them unfit for purpose. The majority of problems were fixed either that evening or the next morning and were allowed back on to the road.
Councillor Pauline McCormick, chairman of the Taxi Licensing Committee, said: "The number of taxis failing the test was a disappointment compared to the last one carried out in Colne. All 11 vehicles will now have to undergo an extra taxi test per year so the condition of the vehicle can be monitored."
Elsewhere in the region, taxi drivers in Manchester staged a 'go-slow' protest recently against the council's decision to ban private hire vehicles from using the city's bus lanes.
