Strathclyde Police may be looking to challenge more than 200 licences held by a Glasgow-based taxi company which is alleged to have links to organised crime.
The constabulary is raising objections about Network Private Hire's bid to secure 44 licences for additional cabs and may also voice complaints about the remainder of its taxi fleet, reports the Herald.
Network, which controversially won a contract to transport NHS patients to and from hospitals last year, has been the target of persistent opposition from the police due to accusations that it its ownership may have had links with gangs.
Earlier this year, the company had its application for new booking office and driver licences rejected by Glasgow City Council under new laws designed to counteract criminals, a decision which the firm is appealing.
However, the company has protested its innocence, with a spokesman stating: "There is no evidence, nor has there ever been, that Network is involved with, has or has had links to organised crime in the five years that the current owners have been in charge."
Earlier this year, Network Private Hire was selected by the local council for work in transporting children to and from schools, a decision which caused further controversy among black cab drivers.
