Taxi drivers in Edinburgh have thrown their weight behind a campaign to coerce the city's airport into dropping its controversial plans for a new drop-off charge.
Almost 3,000 people have signed a petition delivered to Holyrood this week in order to protest airport operator BAA's decision to charge £1 for all vehicles dropping off passengers outside the terminal, reports the Edinburgh Evening News.
Although spokespeople for Edinburgh Airport described the fee as optional and said the money would be invested in improving services, cabbies have expressed concern that the charge will damage their livelihoods.
Local MSP Gavin Brown, who organised the parliamentary petition, thanked drivers for their support for his campaign against the new fee.
He said: "The campaign grows by the day and I urge BAA to scrap the charge plans as soon as possible."
Officials from Glasgow Airport have already reassured local drivers that it has no plans to implement a similar drop-off fee scheme.
