Taxi protest staged in Manchester

Private hire taxi drivers have staged a "go-slow" protest through the streets of Manchester against the decision to ban them from using bus lanes.
Drivers feel they are being discriminated against as Hackney carriages are permitted to use the lanes to stop, pick up and drop off passengers.
The decision follows a bitter dispute between London firm Addison Lee and Transport for London (TfL), which saw the company issued with an injunction to stop the owners telling its drivers to flout the current regulation in place.
Around 1,000 Manchester cabbies staged the protest from the Etihad Stadium to the Town Hall from 13:00 BST on Wednesday (May 16th).
Manchester City Council defended its position stating that a change in the rules would affect bus services.
Councillor Nigel Murphy, the council's executive member for the environment, said: "[Opening the bus lanes] would affect the reliability of bus services, which huge numbers of people in Manchester depend upon to get access to work, education or healthcare."
