Local councils to be given more power on road works
UK couriers and other motorists affected by delays on British roads may be relieved with the news that transport minister Norman Baker has announced plans to give local councils more power in a bid to cut down on congestion.
Councils will be given the ability to charge utilities companies up to £2,500 for making repairs on busy roads at peak times, incentivising them to finish the job faster or carry out work at off-peak times or at night.
Mr Baker said it is extremely frustrating to see roads being dug up at times when the traffic flow is at its height.
"This disruption is not only inconvenient but very expensive, with road works-related congestion costing the economy an estimated £4 billion a year, which is why we are taking firm action," added the transport minister.
Last month the Department for Transport revealed plans to alter its motorway crash policy to cut down on traffic jams for motorists.
