Maintenance process streamlined for local councils
Commercial vehicle users and other people who try to keep abreast of developments in their local road system will see some changes to how these are advertised under new regulations from the Department of Transport.
Previously, local councils and the Highways Agency have been required to advertise proposed traffic restrictions in the local paper.
However, as part of an exercise aimed at cutting red tape and saving money, councils will now be given more autonomy to decide how best to publicise the restrictions - meaning they could use the internet or a poster campaign to do so.
The current system costs roughly £20 million annually, with 60 per cent of the cost being met by the taxpayer.
Transport minister Norman Baker said: "These changes will save council taxpayers, the Highways Agency and businesses millions of pounds that they will now be able to spend on improving services for local residents."
Mr Baker also announced plans to give councils more power to tackle road congestion recently as the government attempts to streamline its road system.
