Motorists who bump into other people's vehicles and fail to leave their car or van insurance details are costing victims £1.3 billion in repairs every year, a study has shown.

According to a survey by Autoglass, a quarter of all complaints are made up of scratches to paintwork and dents in doors, with smashed wing mirrors and broken lights also among the damage reported.

The findings also highlighted that almost a third of British motorists have caused such an incident, with an average repair bill costing £73.

A fifth of prangs were found to have occurred in residential streets and car parks, with 55 per cent of those causing the damage failing to acknowledge their guilt or offer compensation.

A study conducted by the RAC last year found that half of motorists have been involved in a car park prang, with three-quarters of those responsible for the incidents driving away, despite the average bill being £293.57.
