Greater Manchester motorists warned over plate theft risk

Motorists in the Greater Manchester region have been warned to take precautions against thieves who steal number plates for illicit purposes.

Greater Manchester Police is conducting a number of events in Stockport this month to raise awareness of the role that tamper-proof screws can play in preventing plate theft.

PCSO Natasha Manson of the Stockport Central Neighbourhood Policing Team warned that drivers whose licence plates are stolen will typically start to receive an increasing number of parking and speeding tickets.

The officer warned that these could potentially take some time to resolve, which makes fitting the screws a “worthwhile” move.

PCSO Manson added: “The screws are a really simple way to prevent you from a lot stress and inconvenience from having your number plate stolen.”

Last month, the constabulary warned local drivers to ensure they have taken appropriate precautions against opportunist carjackers, with suggestions including making sure that all valuables are removed from the vehicle when it is left alone.
