Manchester City Council penalises motorists for blue badge offences

Two drivers in the Manchester area have been hit with fines after local authorities found them guilty of illegally using blue disabled badges.

Blackley resident Kathleen Morrison and Andrea Conley of Cheadle have been made to pay a combined total of nearly £1,500 after being caught by Manchester City Council fraudulently using the documents.

Ms Morrison was found to have been illegally using her mother’s badge, while Ms Conway was caught in possession of an expired blue badge which had been altered to make it appear valid.

Nigel Murphy, Manchester City Council’s executive member for the environment, said the authority is being extra-vigilant in cracking down on offences of this kind during the current busy period.

“Misusing the disabled blue badge parking system shows a disregard to genuine badge-holders and denies these motorists the chance to visit the city centre without difficulty,” he added.

In August 2010, the council fined four motorists a total of around £2,500 for similar parking offences in the city centre.
