Manchester police take action against carjackers

Police in Manchester have raided several homes in an operation to apprehend a group of carjackers based in the city.

In total, five men and one woman were arrested last week in the areas of Withington, Levenshulme, Beswick and Ardwick.

All six were detained on suspicion of conspiracy to steal.

Officers moved quickly to recover evidence from the suspects’ homes after an operation lasting several months and brought about by a recent rise in carjackings in the south Manchester area.

Detective Sergeant Richard Arthern said: “We have been investigating for some time to identify those responsible and today marks the first proactive strike against an organised crime group suspected of being behind this.”

He asked that motorists remain vigilant and not leave car keys unattended while in public.

Last week, officers in Manchester made two arrests in an effort to stop a nationwide scam to avoid motoring convictions.
