Motorists braced for Christmas traffic congestion

17 December 2012

Drivers all over the UK are bracing themselves for the arduous journey back home for the Christmas period.

Research from esure highlighted statistics from the Department for Transport (DfT) that noted that 23 million Brits will be hitting the road on December 22nd making the potential for congestion extremely high.

The organisation found that different drivers have a number of solutions to ensure they are not caught up in the Christmas traffic. Esure noted that 18 per cent of motorists will leave early on the 21st to beat the rush on the highways.

A further 35 per cent said that they would use minor roads to avoid the long delays on the major motorways and other routes.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure car insurance, said:  “Christmas is always a busy time on our roads but these figures show that Saturday could be a day of real chaos as Brits take full advantage of the weekend falling just before Christmas Eve.”
