A car dealership in Essex is counting the cost after an uninsured vehicle crashed into four cars on its forecourt before being abandoned.
The incident at the Markham & Smith dealership in Witham shows the importance of a combined motor trade insurance policy to guard against unforeseeable events that can damage a business' assets.
In this case, a white Fiat Stilo was smashed into four used cars at the garage and spilled coolant and oil. Neighbours spotted two people running away from the crashed car and called police.
Dealership owner Jason Tarling told the Braintree and Witham Times: “It’s particularly gutting really because the car that hit them had no insurance, tax or MOT certificate and it’s from out of the area.
“The police had to call for a recovery vehicle to take it off the forecourt at about 1.30am for forensic testing and I was here until about 2am cleaning, as well as again the next day.”
The incident damaged four cars, including one belonging to a customer which may have to be written off. In addition three cars for sale were also damaged, including one that suffered a broken engine sump when the Fiat was crashed into it.
Mr Tarling said that the incident had left a “complete mess”.
Police are appealing for help in finding the men who crashed and left the Fiat. They are described as between 18 and 24 and were wearing tracksuits.
