A family-owned car dealership that has grown from one site in Milton Keynes to five local garages today is on course to break its 2014 sales figure by almost 1,000 vehicles.
The Delgarth Motor Company sold 2,900 cars last year and expects to have shifted 3,800 this year, not including trade vehicles.
The business, set up in Milton Keynes in 1981 by Dave Turney and now managed by his son Steve, has a strong management team in place across its dealerships which Steve says is key to the success of the business. If you are expanding, another crucial aspect of your growth is to make sure your have the right motor trade insurance to keep pace with the demands of a larger business.
In addition to the senior management team, each of the sites has a sales manager and a service manager. There are also three business managers to help ensure the smooth running of the business.
Mr Turney told AM Online: “Now we have five sites, I can’t run the business alone and need people to deliver on the goals.”
He said that it was also important to make sure the sales and service departments worked well together to provide good customer service and help engender loyalty in the clientele.
“It is so difficult to know where to advertise to win customers, so I take the view that customers are won in our service department,” he added.
The company makes a point of direct communication between technicians and customers, without going through the medium of receptionists, so customers know exactly what is happening with their vehicle.
In addition, the business is good at offering decent test drives and making sure customers can thoroughly check the new vehicle is suitable for their needs. That includes taking it home to make sure it fits into their garage and is big enough for their luggage.
